SBA Contracting Program for Women-Owned Small Businesses

The Small Business Administration has finally released information on how Women-Owned Small Businesses can participate in the new Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contract Program.
For the first time, specific contracts will be set-aside for certified Woman-Owned and Economically-Disadvantaged Women-Owned Small Businesses (WOSB, EDWOSB). This will help agencies achieve their existing statutory goal of 5% of federal contracting dollars being awarded to WOSBs.
The SBA’s stated goal is for WOSBs to be ready to compete for contracts awarded in the 4th Quarter of FY 2011, when the largest percent of small business contracts are awarded.

Important! – This new program is not the same as the existing self-certification process at SBA and CCR sites. This new set-aside program is only for woman-owned businesses in certain industries that the SBA has determined are under-represented in the federal contracting arena. In order to qualify for this program it is not enough to self-certify your business in CCR or at the SBA’s Dynamic Business search site. If your business is one of the listed industries, you must go through a more stringent certification process and submit documentation to the SBA’s new program repository. Majority ownership of a business is not the only criteria.
