Did Kitty Litter Cause a Radioactive Leak?

Radioactively-contaminated clothing and other items used at the Los Alamos National Laboratory are stored in special waste drums at the site. Last February one of the waste drums ruptured, causing a shut-down at the facility.

Although the immediate cause of the leak hasn’t yet been determined, a recently-released report cited concerns about changes to waste-handling procedures, including the use of organic kitty litter, which was added to the storage drums, and which may have resulted in a chemical reaction.
