IRS Issues Scam Warning – Five Ways to Spot a Scam

The IRS is warning the public to be aware of scam telephone calls from people claiming to be from their office, demanding immediate payment of money, or even saying you’re due a refund.

These scammers can alter caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling; use fake names and bogus IRS badge numbers; or leave an “urgent” callback request.

Remember that the IRS does NOT:

Call to demand payment…… The IRS will NOT call about taxes you owe without first mailing you a bill.

Demand that you pay now…..You will ALWAYS have the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

Require you to use a certain payment method…..The agency will NEVER ask  for a card number over the phone.

Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying.

Use unsolicited email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issues.
