Affirmative Action Plan for Individuals with Disabilities

Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities.  Federal government contractors and subcontractors must take affirmative action to employ qualified individuals with disabilities.

Every federal government contractor with more than 50 employees, and a federal contract of $50,000 or more, must have a written Affirmative Action Program (AAP) in place.

Your company’s AAP should be designed to ensure equal employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, and should document your company’s commitment to the program. It should include measurable objectives, as well as auditing and reporting systems that measure your company’s progress.

The Dept. of Labor’s checklist may help you to assess your compliance.  Sample AAPs are also available.
