President Obama’s Executive Order, released Friday, requires federal agencies to begin using Chip-and-PIN government purchase cards, in an attempt to stop hackers.
The technology has been widely available in Europe for over a decade, but the US has struggled to implement it.
The technology will be installed in government credit cards, as well as debit cards used for citizen benefits.
Major commercial retailers like Home Depot, Target and Walmart are all expected to follow suit in 2015.
